Decals
One of the techniques used to decorate bone china is decals, or transfers.

A delicate and complex way to permanently transfer an image or text onto a piece of ceramic.

Decals
Using Photoshop and finding royalty-free images, I created a visual board of graphics, all relating to women's traditionally unpaid labour roles. Including feeding babies, cooking, washing up, cleaning, shopping, preparing breakfast, lunch and dinner, and taxiing children to different after-school activities, supervising homework, etc.

Designs
Once the designs are reduced in size, they are arranged on the platter to find a design similar to the old patterns produced in Stoke on Trent pottery factories like Spode. The Decals are produced by a specialist Ceramic Decal Printer, - excellent service arrived within 3 days.

Application
The instructions for the application required warm water, a kidney and patience! The platter was fired at 700 degrees in a kiln. Unfortunately, it was too long for some of the transfers, and they blistered off the glaze surface or blurred the results.
