As you will note there are several books listed referencing Decals for my disseration module for the BA, this influenced my decision for the Autumn Exhibition.

Stoke on Trent (visit October 2024)
Stoke-on-Trent is the home of pottery manufacturing. Sadly, this industry is very much in decline. Only last week, Morecroft went into liquidation. Spode and Gladstone Potteries have reinvented their establishments by converting them into museums, and TV productions like The Great Pottery Throw Down are filmed here. There is a rich history of transferware here.

### A Modern-Day Willow Pattern Story
In the bustling city of Shanghai, where glass skyscrapers kiss the clouds and neon lights illuminate the streets, there lived a young woman named Lian. She was the only daughter of a wealthy tech tycoon, Mr. Zhang, who controlled one of the city’s largest AI companies. Her world was one of privilege, yet she longed for freedom and love in a life scripted by tradition and duty.
Lian spent her days under constant surveillance, her every move tracked by the latest security systems her father had invented. Her evenings were filled with dinners and meetings arranged to find her a “suitable” match—one who could enhance the family empire. But Lian’s heart belonged to Kai, a talented but humble artist who painted murals on the walls of forgotten alleyways, bringing beauty to the lives of everyday people.
### The Secret Romance
Lian and Kai met by chance when she wandered into one of the alleys he had transformed with his art. Intrigued by his vision and kindness, she returned often, their bond deepening over stolen moments. He would sketch her portraits on scraps of paper, leaving them hidden in places only she could find.
However, their love was a secret too dangerous to share. When Mr. Zhang discovered their relationship, he was furious. To protect his family’s reputation, he arranged for Lian to marry Li Wei, the ambitious CEO of a rival tech company. It was a union that would secure his dominance in the industry.
### The Great Escape
Desperate to avoid the arranged marriage, Lian and Kai devised a daring plan to escape. Under the cover of night, they fled the city on electric bikes, heading toward the countryside where technology was sparse, and they could start anew. They carried only a small bag of essentials and a digital tablet, on which Kai had drawn a symbolic image of their dream life together—a peaceful home by a willow tree overlooking a serene lake.
### The Tragic Pursuit
Mr. Zhang, using his cutting-edge tracking systems, quickly discovered their location. His security team cornered the lovers near a tranquil river lined with willows. As they tried to cross the water on a narrow bridge, tragedy struck. In a moment of panic, Lian lost her footing, and both she and Kai fell into the rushing waters.
Though their bodies were never found, locals say the lovers’ spirits transformed into a pair of white doves. These doves are often seen flying together under the willow trees, a symbol of eternal love defying even the most advanced technology.
### Legacy
Lian’s tablet, recovered near the river, became an artifact of legend. Her final drawing—a serene scene of love and peace beneath a willow tree—was turned into a global art movement promoting freedom, equality, and love. To this day, couples visit the willow-lined riverbanks, leaving sketches and messages of hope, inspired by Lian and Kai's timeless devotion.
In this modern retelling, the *Willow Pattern* is no longer just a design—it is a testament to the enduring power of love against the constraints of power and progress.
